Newborn Screening Awareness Month
September is national Newborn Screening Awareness month. In order to bring a national spotlight to newborn screening and its detectable diseases, Save Babies Through Screening Foundation, along with several partner organizations, declared the month of September as National Newborn Screening Awareness Month . It has been celebrated every September since the year 2000.
During September, across the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom, Foundation advocates make a special effort to reach out to expectant families to let them know what newborn screening (NBS) is, and what they can do to ensure that their newborn is screened comprehensively and successfully. Awareness and knowledge is key to helping affected children live a normal, healthy life, which they may not have otherwise.

Our advocates reach out to media outlets to ask that they lend a hand in putting newborn screening education into the hands of those that need it most: the over 4 million families who are expecting babies this year. This year SBTS will be holding a press conference that will include speakers from the Foundation’s Board of Directors, physicians whose mission is to help the children affected by these diseases, and television star, Scott Baio, who will speak of his personal newborn screening experience with his daughter, Bailey.

Newborn screening pins are available. They are red, white and gold and feature the DNA symbol, a few drops of blood, and the letters “NBS” for newborn screening. Price is $3.00.
